Nathan, I have also used that quote and attributed it to Ghandi. But it appears there is no record (cf Wikipedia) of his ever having said it. The closest that can be found is by trade unionist Nicholas Klein in a 1918 speech to the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America: "First they ignore you. Then they ridicule you. And then they attack you and want to burn you. And then they build monuments to you."
It's a good quote, anyway.
Here are some others I use often:
"I have three personal rules: If I have something to say, I SAY IT; if I see someone being silenced, I SHOUT IT; and, if I am asked to name names or betray others, I REMAIN SILENT." (Red Slider)
"If they bring a gun, you bring a camera; if they put one of yours in the hospital, you put six of theirs on utube." (Red Slider; var. Sean Connery)
