I think that was from "Balckbery Winter" if I recall correctly. It gave me a small does of optimism after
her oft quoted "We are the first generation in history that is eating its own children."


Her former marriage partner, Gregory Bateson, also provided another that has stayed with
me over the years and which I've found numerous occasions to quote. In a course he was
teaching to resident psychiatrists he defined the term 'sacrament' as

"An exterior and visible sign of an interior state of grace."

To my surprise, atheists and agnostics, as well as religious believers seemed to
appreciate the powerful sentiment expressed in those words.
